Nature Communications: Biology of a widespread uncultivated archaeon

Publication
SM1 Euryarchaeon

In an international collaboration led by a team at the University of Regensburg, Markus Schmid, Arno Schintlmeister, and Michael Wagner contributed Raman microspectroscopy and NanoSIMS analyses to comprehensively characterize a representative member of the SM1 Euryarchaeon lineage, an uncultivated, yet abundant group of subsurface archaea. The study revealed surprising metabolic and structural features empowering this widely distributed archaeon to predominate anaerobic groundwater, where it may represent an important CO2 sink.
